COURSE DESCRIPTION:  

This is an introductory course aimed at 3D graphics, environmental and industrial designers such as architecture, landscape architecture, urban planners, product designers, virtual space designers, engineers, project managers or any profession that uses computers to design spaces virtually or physically. How can we optimize and understand the role of the digital medium in today’s A.E.C. industry will be the focus of the class. Designing with digital tools has affected our creative, communication, documentation and thinking process. This is an introduction course to the world of creation using digital tools. We will be using various soft wares like computer-aided design and others to enhance ‘Object Making and Space Making’.  More than a design tool, new technologies can improve communication, help control the design process, and reduce time to market. COGNITION AND COMPUTATION IN DIGITAL DESIGN with spatial knowledge are a new frontier that will change the way we work, live and relate to our natural environment. The framework of the class is to think of the environment as a system and structure and Design as the first act of human intention.  

From the beginning of time, design awareness has been a key element to communication. Just as information conveyed by the written word holds significance for humanity in the 20th century and the symbols of early cave paintings held a deep significance for the artists and cultures that produced them, now the process of design and visual computation simultaneously offer us a new paradigm. Digital design and visual computation uses rigorous mathematical, graphics, social, psychological and visual principles to conceptualize and organize a given need. As a core element of visual computation we have the power of space. SPACE is the vessel that communicates ideas; it is an inseparable part of the design process. It communicates with oneself and others. Spaces and objects are documented through traditional standard graphics for documentation of the construction process.  The study of graphics requires mental skills as well as manual dexterity. During our course we will use and learn visual and graphic techniques.  We will dissect space by analyzing its geometry, shapes, volumes, proportion and relationship The study space and object making allows the student to develop visualization and design skills that apply to various fields.  New technologies are different since they represent design ideas with new dynamics of time and space. Space and form manipulations like multiplication, combination, subdivision, growth, array and fractal are space generators for virtual or physical space.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Student will become confident using a computer technology for design projects.

Student will be introduced to the major operating systems, hardware and software that are used in industry.

Student will develop visual creativity using 3d and 2d modeling tools.

Student will be able to operate, share and reference drawings locally, local area network and on the internet.

Student will be familiar with the new impact of services in the design profession in information system, facilities management, modeling and visualization

 

APPROPRIATE READINGS:

Web sites for Bently.com, Autodesk.com, 3dstudio.com. These are sites where the projects are maintained in industry where manufactures, designers, architects, contractors share information. Magazines; Dwelling, Architecture Record, Online, Design One, Arh-Tech.

 

 APPROPRIATE WRITING ASSIGNMENTS, SYMBOLIC MANIPULATION, OR SKILLS DEMONSTRATION

Assignments to demonstrate computation skills for Designers are using CAD and 3d modeling. Student will use simple manipulations of the tool bars library and blocks to create a space with meaning, message and documentation.

 

APPROPRIATE OUTSIDE-OF-CLASS ASSIGNMENTS:

From given (bibliography) webnet_graphy student will identify Internet site that augment and enrich their space-object project

 

APPROPRIATE REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS REQUIRING CRITICAL THINKING:

To develop a project that shows all phases of design process. The student becomes a problem solver that goes through the design process. Under defined architectural problem; the student identifies the need, ideates appropriate solutions, selects the best one, develops the project, reflects on creation and documents the object or space. The project goes through drawing creation, virtual augmentation, and space animation, covering simple 2d and 3d computer tool bars.

All projects have to be documented by hand either as a sketch or drafted, digitally, photographed and described using references and quotes Grading

Each Project has a grade and 100% maximum    40% for the  Model,  40% Drawing analog/digital   and  20% Written Description.
